There are mainly two types of electric vehicles like battery electric that run purely on battery and hybrid vehicles that use both gasoline and battery for power. In both these types of cars, battery or an energy storage unit is an essential part. There are different types of batteries that can be used in an electric car and some of the commonly used energy sources are as follows.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

It is a common type of battery that is used in most of the consumer devices like mobile phones, laptops, etc. The main reason for its popularity is its high energy per unit compared to other types of batteries. Since its energy efficiency and the property to work in high temperatures, it is used in most of the affordable electric cars that are available in the market. It also has the property to save the energy at idle state by reducing self-discharge. Another quality of Lithium-Ion batteries is that most of the components of this battery can be recycled.

Nickel Hybrid Batteries

Nickel metal hybrid batteries are the energy storage unit mostly used in computers and medical equipment. Since it has a longer life than other acid based batteries, it is used as an energy source in electric hybrid vehicles. The energy mass ratio is equally proportional to these types of batteries. These batteries are considered a safer energy storage unit because it is abuse tolerant. The main drawbacks of the nickel metal hybrid batteries are its high self-discharge rate. It also produces more heat than other batteries.

Lead-Acid Batteries

It is a type of battery that can store more energy than any other batteries and it is safer than metal batteries. Even though it is inexpensive, it is not preferred by many people because it discharges only less energy compared to other types of batteries. It also has a lesser life span than Lithium-Ion batteries and it is not efficient in working at cold temperatures. Due to its inefficiency, Lead-acid batteries are used in most of the electric vehicles as a secondary energy storage unit.

Every type of battery has its own pros and cons. The main advantage of using an electrically powered vehicle is that it is a more cost effective mode of transport. It also helps people to reduce pollutants in the atmosphere. Due to its popularity, many new inventions are being made frequently to make electric vehicles more efficient.
