Types of electric vehicles

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)

These vehicles are what we generally call electric vehicles that have rechargeable batteries. These batteries can be charged with the help of external sources. EV chargers are normally classified into Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 or DC fast charging. These classifications are made based on their speed of charging.

Level 1: These chargers utilize a standard household outlet that has an output of 120 Volts. With Level 1 chargers, it will take almost 8 hours for charging an EV to run 75-80 miles. These chargers can be used to charge most EVs that are currently available on the market.

Level 2:This type of chargers are special systems that have an output of 240 Volts. They are commonly found at public charging stations and workplaces. It can charge an EV in almost four hours to run 75-80 miles.

Level 3: This particular level is also known as the direct current (DC) fast-charging system. They are the fastest charging systems that is now available in the EV market. The chargers have the ability to charge EVs in 30 minutes to run for 90 miles.

Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV)

These vehicles are also known as Extended Range Electric Vehicles. They have two modes of charging. Like the electric vehicles, they can also be plugged into an external source to charge. But these vehicles also come with an inbuilt regenerative braking. This is a special mechanism for converting the kinetic energy for charging itself. These vehicles depend on gasoline for generating electricity. The energy thus produced can be utilized immediately or it can be stored for using later. However, the engine won’t have maximum output when they are running with the help of the backup power source.

Such vehicles only utilize 40-60% less amount of fuel than traditional ICE vehicles, as the electricity is produced using its domestic sources. Also, these vehicles are helpful in reducing the dependency on conventional energy sources.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)

Such vehicles are equipped with both type of batteries and an ICE that runs on fuel. These batteries support the ICE by providing it the capacity of a normal conventional vehicle in terms of features including speed and run rate, etc. But such vehicles cannot be charged using an external electricity source for charging, instead, they depend on regenerative braking through fuels.

Electric hybrid cars are not as fuel-efficient as EVs. But they have more fuel efficiency when compared to conventional gasoline-powered vehicles. These cars are 20-30% more fuel efficient when compared to cars that run on petrol or diesel.
